Proceedings of the 16th Seventh Century Syrian Numismatic Round Table held at The Hive, Worcester on 6th and 7th April 2019
Paperback, 228 pages, illustrated in black and white.
This volume contains 16 papers presented at a two-day conference held in Worcester in April 2019, seven of which deal solely with Arab-Byzantine coinage. An eighth paper describes an intriguing new seventh century coin type which may be either Byzantine or Arab-Byzantine, with others using contemporary documents and coins to explore historical questions, and two short papers giving interesting details of recent excavations at Jerash and Beth Shean. There is also a paper on an emergency Byzantine coinage from Antioch, one on weight standards, one on coin circulation in Egypt in the 6th and 7th century, and a discussion of the significance of die-axis in medieval numismatics.
It demonstrates that the Syrian Arab-Byzantine coinage abounds with new research, new discoveries and, perhaps surprisingly, new questions.
